Cabada has 4 hits in SBCC loss

SBCC sophomore Sammy Cabada was 4-4 on Friday and pitcher Victoria Lucido went 3-4 but it wasn’t enough to prevent a 10-4 softball loss at Long Beach.

The Vaqueros (2-6) scored all four runs in the third to pull within 5-4 but the Vikings (9-4) answered with three in the third and two more in the fourth.

Amanda Caras, Tianna Velasquez and Alex Abbott had RBI singles for SBCC, which left 10 runners on base.

“We were focused at the start but a misplayed ball in the outfield put us in a tailspin in the first inning,” said coach Paula Congleton. “We came back in the third, then they got a couple of Punch and Judy hits and things got away from us.

“Our defense was better today. Alice Cen made a great leaping catch at shortstop and also threw out a runner on a ball that was right up the middle.”

The Vaqueros play at L.A. Valley on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. A day later, they open defense of their Golden West Invitational title against Southwestern and Pasadena.
