Base: Cabrillo’s Hamby holds down Vaqueros

Cabrillo put four runs on the board in the first inning on Friday en route to a 6-3 win over SBCC in the baseball season opener at Aptos.

The Vaqueros managed just five singles and got all their runs on fielder’s choice groundouts, including two in the ninth. Santa Barbara loaded the bases in the ninth but Mike Murano got the last out on a flyout to right field.

“It was disappointing, we had first-game jitters,” said SBCC coach Jeff Walker. “Hats off to Cabrillo. They came out ready to play and were rewarded.”

Nat Hamby went six innings to get the win. Freshman Connor Detko also pitched six-plus innings and suffered the loss.

The same teams will meet in a doubleheader today, starting at 10 a.m.
