No. 15 UCSB (2-0) continued its strong opening of the 2013 women’s water polo campaign Saturday morning at Loyola Marymount with a 20-3 victory against Cal State San Bernardino (0-1) at Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center.
Junior Molly Hafferkamp and freshman Holly Smith led the team in goals, racking-up three goals each in the Gauchos astounding victory. UCSB was able to get out to a 5-2 lead after the first quarter and left it all in the pool. The Gauchos tallied up five more goals to maintain their lead at half time, controlling the game 10-3.
Senior goalkeeper Ruth Milne did not allow any more goals in for the Coyotes, keeping them scoreless after half time. UCSB was able to rack up an impressive 10 more goals in the second half, bringing the Gauchos to their second win of the season.
The Gauchos open their home schedule this Friday, Jan. 25 as they host the annual UCSB Winter Invite. Their games begin Friday when the Gauchos play Azusa Pacific at 9 am, Concordia at 11:45 am and No. 18 Cal Baptist at 4:45 pm at Campus Pool. The team will stay at Campus Pool the remainder of the weekend, playing four more games against Sonoma State, No. 5 Arizona State, No. 3 UCLA and Pomona-Pitzer.
