GBK: Dons find way past DP

On a night when Santa Barbara High honored an all-time great and raised money for breast cancer research, the Dons’ girls basketball team came away with a 50-36 victory over visiting Dos Pueblos.

Santa Barbara freshman Amber Melgoza drains a three pointer in the second quarter to put the dons up 22-9.

Dons freshman Amber Melgoza drains a three pointer in the second quarter to put the dons up 22-9, with DP’s Brandy Jimmenez defending.

“This game, it wasn’t our best night but we somehow find out how to get it done,” said Dons captain Ivette Gil. “Every possession coming down to the end, we really try to capitalize on what they give us.”

The Dons led by just six entering the final quarter. Gil scored eight of her game-high 20 points in the fourth period as the Dons pulled away.

Amber Melgoza drained two of her four 3-pointers down the stretch.

It was still one of Santa Barbara’s lowest scoring outputs of the season.

“I thought DP played with a lot of energy and enthusiasm on defense,” said Dons head coach Andrew Butcher.

Jennifer Jimmenez led Dos Pueblos with eight points. Brandy Jimmenez tallied seven and Emi Parker six.

At halftime of Santa Barbara High’s annual “Think Pink” game, Holly Ford(Emerson) watched with friends and family as her retired No. 23 jersey was unveiled on the JR Richards Gymnasium wall next to brother Don Ford.

Holly Ford was a two-time CIF Player of the Year as a Don before becoming an All-American at USC.
