BSoc: Chargers split on windy day

Dos Pueblos’ Omar Montalvo scored in both games for the Chargers at the Hart Tournament in Santa Clarita on Friday.

The second was a game-winner as the Chargers defeated Cleveland 1-0 in the two teams’ second match of the day. Dos Pueblos fell 2-1 to Hart earlier in the day.

In the Chargers’ first game of the day versus the tournament hosts, DP gave up two goals in the opening 10 minutes.

“We just didn’t seem to get out of the van mentally for a little bit,” explained head coach Matt York.

Dos Pueblos cut the lead to a single goal when Omar Montalvo produced and converted a penalty kick in the 65th minute.

Montalvo scored his second goal of the day in the second game against Cleveland. Montalvo chased down a ball flicked ahead in the midfield on a kick from Dos Pueblos goalkeeper Alex Mathews. Montalvo gathered possession and beat the keeper near post to give the Chargers the game winner.

Both teams battled windy conditions.

“It was really a challenge for both teams to figure out different tactics to play,” York said.

Sophomore Tim Heiduk and senior captain Roberth Bertha were impact players according to their coach.

Dos Pueblos’ record is 4-6-2.
