Vaqueros seek to slow down West L.A.

If SBCC hopes to reach the .500 mark in Friday night’s football season finale, it will have to slow down West L.A.’s potent passing attack. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. in La Playa Stadium.

The Vaqueros (4-5, 3-3 American Pacific Conference) are coming off a 36-18 win at Glendale. They rushed for a season-high 244 yards, led by quarterback Jarred Evans with 111 yards and two touchdowns. Evans has eight TDs in his last three games (5 rush, 3 pass).

“West L.A. is our bowl game,” said coach Craig Moropoulos. “To finish 5-5 after an up-and-down season would be very rewarding.”

West L.A. (4-5, 3-3) has an explosive passing attack that averages 350 yards a game. Sophomore QB Dallas Lopez has thrown for 3,009 yards with a 67.5 percent completion rate. He’s tossed 24 TDs and 10 interceptions.

Two weeks ago, West L.A. routed L.A. Southwest 83-7 and Lopez threw for 526 yards and 6 TDs. Last Saturday, the Wildcats beat L.A. Valley 26-16. The Vaqueros edged Valley 14-6 on Sept. 22.

SBCC’s defense is ranked No. 1 in the conference, allowing 23.3 points and 336 yards. Linebacker Morgan Nevin had 14 tackles last week and is No. 1 in the state with 105 (11.7 per game).

The Vaqueros will honor the SBCC Veteran’s Support Program through their “Honorary Captain” program. All veterans will be admitted free, along with Faculty and Staff, students with Activity Stickers and Kids under 5.

General admission is $5 and $3 for students. The game will be broadcast on AM 1290 KZSB radio with John Martony calling the action.
