IN-GAME UPDATES: Culver City Centaurs at Dos Pueblos Football


 

PRE-GAME INTRO: In the first round of the Western Division CIF-ss Ford Championships, Culver City travels to Dos Pueblos High School for tonight’s game in Goleta.

The victor will presumably advance to a second-round meeting with the Division’s top-seed Lompoc.

The Centaurs come into the contest having won two straight. Dos Pueblos, on the other hand, lost its final game of the regular season but had won its previous three before that.

Culver City is 5-0 when it scores 30 or more points this season and 1-4 when it doesn’t. Dos Pueblos, meanwhile, wins with its defense. The Chargers won five games in which they scored 27 points or less.

FOURTH QUARTER

Game ?Over – Centaurs advance with a 34-20 victory.

2:31 – Dos Pueblos turns the ball over on downs after four incomplete passes towards the endzone.

3:01 – Dos Pueblos keeps its hopes alive with a pass interference call on fourth down. It’s the third such flag on Culver City during this possession, helping the Chargers keep going. Ball now on 19 yard line with a Dos Pueblos first down.

3:10 – Dos Pueblos faces a 4th down and 15 to keep the game alive. The ball is on the Culver City 34 yard line. The Chargers have called a timeout to talk it over.

5:06 – Culver City has been all about the big play tonight. Julius Wilson just broke off a 75-yard run for the Centaurs’ third touchdown play of 70 yards or more. Wilson also had a 90-yard kick return taken away because of an illegal block. Culver City takes its biggest lead of the game at 34-20.

6:00 – Dos Pueblos’ Nico Bornand, who has caught a touchdown tonight, attemopts and makes a 48-yard field goal for the Chargers, bringing Dos Pueblos to within a touchdown. Culver City leads 27-20.

THIRD QUARTER

End of Quarter – Stanley Norman is having a primetime performance. The sophomore defensive back and wide receiver has scored two long touchdowns and has two interceptions on defense. Norman recorded a 72-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter and then intrecepted both passes in the third quarter, taking the second back 70 yards for his second TD. Norman has the Centaurs leading 27-17 going into the final period.

1:18 – Dos Pueblos scores its first points of the second half. Nico Bornand catches a four-yard pass from LeShon Bell to finish a five-play, 67-yard drive that was highlighted by a 56-yard catch by Bornand. Dos Pueblos pulls to 27-17.

2:40 – Dos Pueblos finally catches a break as Xan Cuevas underthrows his receiver on fourth down, allowing the Chargers to regain possession on their own 33-yard line.

3:42 – Dos Pueblos isn’t doing itself any favors. The Chargers just coughed up a fumble on the kick return, giving up their third turnover of the third quarter.

3:58 – Culver City’s Stanley Norman just intercepted his second pass of tonight’s game, taking this one 70 yards back for a touchdown. The Chargers were driving into Culver City territory having just converted a fourth down. The Centaurs drive a dagger in, building their lead to 27-10.

 

SECOND QUARTER

0:42 – Culver City marches 80 yards in less than two minutes as Centaurs quarterback Xan Cuevas took control. Cuevas completed four passes on the drive, including a 5-yard TD throw to Brandon Hassan. Culver City grabs a 20-10 lead.

2:32 – Dos Pueblos answers on a 29-yard field goal by Nico Bornand. Jordan Degraffinreid’s long kick return set up the Dos Pueblos score. The Chargers ran three plays before kicking the field goal. Dos Pueblos still trails 13-10.

4:21 – Culver City takes its first lead on a 5-yard run by Akili Skanall. The Centaurs made up for losing a 90-yard punt return for a touchdown by Julius Wilson because of a block in the back. Skanall’s run caps a 94-yard drive.

9:39 – Dos Pueblos punted to Culver City on fourth down but an unexplained personal foul penalty flag allowed the Chargers to retain possession.

FIRST QUARTER

0:00 – On the last play of the quarter, Xan Cuevas throws a screen pass on third down to his outside receiver Stanley Norman, who breaks a tackle and races down the sideline for a 72-yard touchdown. The PAT fails however, leaving Dos Pueblos with a 7-6 lead.

5:12 – Dos Pueblos scores first, taking a 7-0 lead on a 10-yard scoring run by Anthony Spiritosanto. The senior running back took advantage of a Charger fumble recovery at Culver City’s own 14-yard line, carrying the ball three times before finding the endzone.

7:34 – Sacks by Culver City’s Travis Hudson and Winner Watts makes sure Dos Pueblos’ field position doesn’t amount to anything. The Chargers punt pins the Centaurs on their own 4-yard line.

9:37 – Dos Pueblos gets Culver City to punt thanks to a 20-yard loss after a bad snap off quarterback Xan Cuevas’ head. DP starts its first drive with excellent field position on the Culver City 37.

12:00 ?- Dos Pueblos kicks off to Culver City, which begins its first drive at the 20 after Nico Bornand drives the kickoff out of the endzone. The Centaurs are dressed in white jerseys with royal blue pants that match the numbers on their backs. Dos Pueblos is wearing their usual home colors, a midnight blue with gold helmets.

12:00 – Kick off scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Scott O’Leary Stadium
