Local softball coach Bill Wagner has been named the recipient of the “2012 Central California ASA – David James Coach of the Year Award.”

Each year the award recognizes a youth softball coach who best exemplifies the legacy of former coach David James. For 20 years, James was heavily involved with the Central California Amateur Softball Association.

As a coach, he mentored hundreds of players of all ages. He was known for his ability to teach players the game of softball but also for his lessons on sportsmanship and in how to be a great person both on and off the field. James stressed school over sports and always reminded both players and parents that softball was a game; a game that should be played hard, but with the right attitude.

Wagner coached the U12 All-Star team for the Goleta Valley Girls Softball Association. Wagner’s team won this year’s ASA Central California championship and traveled to Salem, Oregon to compete in Western Nationals.
