Dons punish Fillmore in opener

Jeff Paschke’s 13 points were a team-high for Santa Barbara High’s boys basketball team on Tuesday, as the Dons won their first season-opening game since 2007 with a 67-21 demolishing of Fillmore.

Jack Baker added 10 points, Emilio nine and Nicky Von Weisenberger had eight for the Dons.

Paschke, Baker and Gonzalez combined to pull down 22 rebounds.

“Great season opener defensively for the Dons. Held Fillmore to six second half points,” reported Santa Barbara assistant coach Andy Gil.

The defense produced 10 steals and forced 22 turnovers.

Fillmore (1-1) was coming off a season-opening 58-42 win over Hueneme. The Flashes, who play six games this week, face St. Bonaventure on Wednesday to start the Nordhoff Tournament.

The last time Santa Barbara won a season opener was November 28, 2007 when the Dons destroyed Bethel Christian 124-16.

Santa Barbara’s home opener is Friday against Oxnard.
