Ventura takes 1st place clash from Vaqueros

Ventura remained unbeaten in the WSC North by defeating visiting SBCC 4-1 on Tuesday night in a women’s soccer match.

The Pirates, ranked No. 13 in the state, improved to 12-5-1 and 7-0-1. The 14th-ranked Vaqueros (8-3-4, 4-1-2) suffered their first conference setback. The teams tied 2-2 in their first meeting on Oct. 14 in Santa Barbara.

“We easily could have been up 2-0 in the first 10 minutes,” said coach John Sisterson. “We created a lot of chances. We just had too many defensive errors.”

Ventura took a 2-0 halftime lead on goals in the 16th and 34th minutes. The Vaqueros nearly scored in the first five minutes of the second half. The Pirates put the game away with goals in the 67th and 72nd minutes that made it 4-0.

Sandy Grimaldo got her ninth goal in the 81st minute for the Vaqueros, converting a pass across the goal mouth from Courtney Allard.

The Vaqueros travel to Hancock on Friday for a 4 p.m. game at Santa Maria High.
