Royals get back at Ventura, create 3-way tie

San Marcos got revenge on Ventura in Tuesday’s Channel League match, defeating the Cougars 28-30, 25-15, 25-15, 25-20.

While the Cougars topped San Marcos in their first meeting, the Royals have won three straight league matches to fight their way into a three-way tie for first place with Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos.

San Marcos took away the effectiveness of Ventura’s middles and got stronger as the match continued.

Stasi Kunz and Emily Allen matched each other with a team-high 12 kills. Carly Yarnell recorded nine kills with just one error while making her presence felt at the night with a pair of blocks.

Anika Wilson’s 24 digs helped the team operate in system.

“(Anika’s) really coming into that position and recognizing she has a lot of control,” said Royals head coach Erica Downing.

San Marcos hosts Santa Barbara in its next match on Thursday. The game is a Breast Cancer Awareness fundraiser.
