Dos Pueblos survives 5-setter against scrappy Ventura

Dos Pueblos survived a tremendous defensive performance by Ventura and escaped with a five-set win to stay in a tie for first place in the Channel League girls volleyball race.

Led the play of middle Emma Eccles, the Chargers prevailed 23-25, 25-23, 25-16, 19-25, 16-14 at Ventura on Thursday night.

Dos Pueblos improves to 6-2 in league and shares the top spot with San Marcos with one match remaining.

Eccles had eight kills and hit a .471 to pace the Charger win.

“Credit Emma Eccles on a great night,” DP coach Todd Garrett said.

McKenzie Goss was the Chargers’ team leader in kills with 11 followed by Marina Boulanger with 10 and Colleen O’Connor with nine.

Garrett said it was tough getting balls down against a scrappy Ventura team.

“Ventura played amazing defense,” he said.

On the DP side, Boulanger led the team with 15 digs. Setter Maddie Leiphardt scooped up 12 digs and Mia Cattaneo added 10.

“I’m proud of the girls for pulling out a great win,” said Garrett.

He added that the team still has some things to work on.

“We need to take care of the ball a little better on defense and we can’t give the opponent so many unearned points. We combined for 27 errors on offense. We have a few days off from play to go and get better.”
