Chargers, Dons go distance again in final league match

Santa Barbara High’s girls volleyball team returned the favor to Dos Pueblos on Tuesday by defeating the Chargers 25-20, 28-26, 20-25, 18-25, 15-6 in a Channel League match.

The Chargers were the ones who won in five games in the first meeting between the two teams. This time, the two rivals took 2 hours and 32 minutes to decide the important league match.

The result leaves Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara tied in the league standings with an identical record of 5-3. San Marcos’ win over Buena on Tuesday gives the league championship to the Royals outright.

“Sam Rhine inspired our offense and Melissa Scott had some key blocks in games three and four,” reported Chargers head coach Todd Garrett.

Rhine, a middle blocker, led the Chargers with 14 kills.

Garrett lamented that unforced errors dug too deep a hole for Dos Pueblos to come back from.
