2.?Dos Pueblos Chargers (3-1)

PREVIOUS GAME:?Lompoc 31, Dos Pueblos 14

NEXT GAME:?vs. Rio Mesa (1-2), at?Scott O’Leary Field, Friday, 7 p.m.

NOTES:?The Chargers suffered their first defeat of the season on Friday but actually moved up two places in this week’s county rankings. Dos Pueblos held its own against Lompoc, the No. 2 team in the Western Division. Dos Pueblos should be able to improve to 4-1 this Friday against a Rio Mesa team that has already lost games this season to Channel League teams Ventura and Santa Barbara.

3.?Santa Barbara Dons?(3-1)

PREVIOUS GAME:?Santa Barbara 26, Rio Mesa 14

NEXT GAME:?vs. Centennial Bakersfield (1-2), at Peabody Stadium, Friday, 7 p.m.

NOTES:?The Dons rebounded from a tough loss to Atascadero the week before to top Rio Mesa. The Dons have scored at least 25 points in each of their four games so far, which include wins over St. Joseph, Beverly Hills and Rio Mesa.

4.?St. Joseph Knights (2-1)

PREVIOUS GAME:??St. Joseph 22, Palma 7

NEXT GAME:?vs San Luis Obispo (2-2), Friday, 7 p.m.

NOTES: ?St. Joseph recorded its second quality win in a row against Palma of Salinas. After a season-opening loss to Santa Barbara that came down to the final play, the Knights have responded and begin Pac-7 League play this Friday on a high note.

5.?Righetti Warriors (1-3)

PREVIOUS GAME:?Valencia 48, Righetti 9

NEXT GAME:?at Paso Robles (2-1), at PRHS, Friday, 7 p.m.

NOTES:?The Warriors, who had held the County’s No. 2 position all season until now, did not show up on offense or defense on Friday against a team that hadn’t won a game in two previous attempts. Righetti’s offense failed to reach the endzone until the fourth quarter and the defense allowed a season-high 49. The Warriors’ insanely difficult preseason schedule is now over, with Pac-7 opponent Paso Robles next. The Warriors are still a quality team despite the season record.

6. Bishop Diego Cardinals (4-0)

PREVIOUS GAME: Bishop Diego 53, Santa Clara 7

NEXT GAME: Bye Week;?(Sept. 28 -?vs. Santa Fe Christian (1-2), at La Playa Stadium, 7:30 p.m.)

NOTES: ?The Cardinals are the No. 1 team in the Southern Section’s Northwest Division, having averaged over 50 points a game in four straight victories. The Cardinals are on a bye week preparing for their toughest test yet, a Friday-night matchup with Santa Fe Christian.

7. Carpinteria Warriors (2-2)

PREVIOUS GAME: Carpinteria 33, Santa Ynez 18

NEXT GAME: at Santa Clara (2-2), at?SCHS, Friday, 7 p.m.

NOTES:?The Warriors have now won two straight after losing their first two. While the two wins have come on the road, the Warriors return to Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium to host Santa Clara this Friday. Tri-Valley League rival Bishop Diego just routed the Saints 53-7, so the Warriors’ result this Friday against the same team will be used to compare the league foes.

  1. Bishop crushed Santa Ynez, while Dos Pueblos beat Santa ynez by a score of 12 to 0….so how is DP ahead of Bishop in these rankings ?

    • Here’s my reasoning Joe…

Dos Pueblos played Santa Ynez the first game of the year. I think the Chargers offense has improved since then. Their win on the road against SLO gave them considerable points in my book. Bishop is No. 6 because its schedule has been so soft. The Cardinals have been able to get out to big early leads against weak teams and haven’t really had to deal with adversity or play 4 quarters yet. To be fair, the Cardinals are extremely well coached and have some fantastic playmakers at key positions. Not missing a beat without Jack Gregson is a huge credit to the coaching staff and a testament to the amount of talent on the roster. Their No. 2 ranking in the Northwest Division is well deserved. I just think the bigger schools would be able to do a better job stopping Bishop’s run game and eventually wear them down over 4 quarters.
