Royals win two-of-three in Fresno

San Marcos’ girls tennis team is competing at the California Tennis Classic in Fresno this weekend, starting out winning two of three matches in pool play.

The Royals, playing in the Division 3 tournament, lost to Clovis West in their first match before defeating Turlock 4-2 and San Marin 3-3 (8-6).

“It was a nice start to our season,” said Royals head coach Alex Sheldon. “We played well today against good competition but we also learned where we need to improve.”

Freshman Renee Handley won all three of her singles matches in straight sets for San Marcos, which needed every set against San Marin.

Jordan Lund won in straight sets as did the doubles team of Leanne Sturman and Julia Frohling.

Sturman and Frohling had another big win, coming back after losing the first set in their match against Turlock and eventually winning 10-8 in the 10-point tiebreaker.

The Royals play Bullard next on Saturday morning.
