Royals finish second, Hauschild racks up 29 for tourney

Troy bested San Marcos’ boys water polo team on Saturday for the Riverside Tournament championship after an 11-4 decision in the title match.

San Marcos fell behind 6-1 in the first half following an 8-7 overtime victory over Montebello in the semifinals.

“We had some early opportunities that we were unable to convert on and I think just ran out of gas,” explained Royals head coach Jeff Ashton, who also said Troy’s goalkeeper played a great game.

Shane Hauschild scored eight of the Royals’ 11 goals on the day and finished the tournament with 29 goals and 18 drawn ejections in five games.

The game-winner against Montebello came from Hauschild, who drew a penalty and converted the free shot.

The loss snaps San Marcos’ eight-game win streak to start the season. The Royals are now 8-1.
