Harris, SBCC women’s soccer off to a hot start

Freshman forward Brandie Harris found the net for the third straight game and the SBCC women’s soccer team recorded a shutout for the third time in five days on Saturday as the Vaqueros blanked West Valley of Saratoga 3-0 in the Nike Women?s Soccer Classic at Ventura College.

Santa Barbara is 3-0 and goalie Brianna Robinson hasn?t allowed a score in 270 minutes.

Alexandra Abbot found the net in the 35th minute from 25 yards on an assist from Sandy Grimaldo. One minute later, Grimaldo eluded the defense with a backheel move and fed Harris, who fired the ball to the back post.

Grimaldo leads the Vaqueros with six points in three games.

In the 78th minute, defender Sonja Gustafsson went on a long run through three players and scored from 20 yards.

?The more the game went on, the better we knocked it around,? said coach John Sisterson. ?We had a lot of opportunities. It?s been a great week.?

Sisterson praised the defensive play of Gustaffson, Marissa Fontanes and Debbie Arreola.

The Vaqueros travel to Taft on Tuesday for a 1 p.m. game. They?ll make their home debut on Friday against Chaffey at 2 p.m.
