Freshman Sara Feder’s goal with 3:25 remaining in regulation pulled UC Santa Barbara even with Pacific and neither team scored in the two overtime periods finishing in a 3-3 tie. The Gauchos battled back from a 3-1 second half deficit, but needed some help from the Tigers to do so.
Just a minute after Zarette Munoz-Aguilar scored a goal on a header at the 55:40 mark to give her team its 3-1 advantage, Pacific gave it right back. With the ball in the penalty box, a Tiger defender tried to pass back to her goalkeeper, Kathrine Larsen, but the pass was wide and eluded Larsen, going in the net for an own goal to make it 3-2.
The score remained 3-2 until 86:35 when senior Dyanne Anderson pounded a cross from the left corner and Feder was there to head it home, tying the game and setting up the scoreless overtime.
The Gauchos got on the scoreboard first on an outstanding run by sophomore Indiana Mead. Mead took a pass just over the midfield and drove down the left side of the field, fading right into the top of the box where she unleashed a shot that went just inside the right post at 4:48 of the first half. It was Mead’s first goal of the season.
Pacific tied the score and then took the lead during a three minute stretch late in the first half. Maricela Padilla scored first at 31:22 when she took a nice feed from Mirella Mattos and blasted in a shot from 25 yards out. At 34:03, it was Shayda Ansari taking a cross from Kortney Agdeppa and sliding a shot into the left side of the goal.
The match between the Gauchos and Tigers was very physical. The teams combined for 38 fouls, including 23 by the visitors from Stockton.
UCSB will travel south next weekend for two Big West matches. On Friday, Oct. 5 the Gauchos play a 7:00 p.m. contest at Long Beach State and on Sunday, Oct. 7 they travel to UC Irvine for a 1:00 p.m. match. Santa Barbara returns home for its final two home games the following weekend, hosting Hawaii on Friday Oct. 12 at 7:00 p.m. and then Cal State Northridge at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14.
