A young Dos Pueblos water polo team learned what it’s like playing the top high school team in the nation on Thursday.
Mater Dei, which entered the season with a CIF-Southern Section record 48-match winning streak, made it 49 in a row with a 21-4 beating of the Chargers at the Elings Aquatic Center.
Mater Dei has five returning starters from a CIF Division 1 championship squad. Among them are junior national team players Jon and James Walters. Jon Walters this summer committed to play for defending NCAA champion USC.
Mater Dei is coached by former Dos Pueblos standout and U.S. Olympian Chris Segesman.
Grant Schroeder, a returning starter from DP’s Channel League championship team, scored three goals and Jake Griffin added one against the Monarchs.
DP and Mater Dei will play in the Santa Barbara Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Chargers open the tournament at home against Loyola.
