Cate split a boys water polo doubleheader in Santa Maria on Saturday, falling to Pioneer Valley 10-7 and rebounding to beat Hueneme 9-8.
Zack Allen and Matthew Firestone each scored two goals against Pioneer Valley.
Coach Nathan Aldredge said it was a physical game, with 13 ejections called.
Against Hueneme, Firestone made a steal and put-back inside two meters to break a 7-7 tie late in the fourth period. Allen poured in seven goals and Firestone three goals to lead the Rams.
“It was a stout effort in both games, but Cate returns home on Wednesday to host Channel Islands with much to work on,” said Aldredge. “There is still a lot to improve on the defensive end for this young and relatively inexperienced team, but the day was a valuable experience for the lads to start the year.”
