Hall-of-Fame coach C. Vivian Stringer to speak in Santa Barbara

UCSB’s women’s basketball coach Carlene Mitchell gained experience as an assistant coach at Rutgers under the tutelage of Rutgers coach C. Vivian Stringer

The defending Big West Tournament champion UC Santa Barbara women’s basketball team will kick-off the 2012-13 season with “A Legend and Links,” an event that will combine a keynote address by legendary coach C. Vivian Stringer, dinner with the 2012-13 Gauchos and an exclusive round of golf with the UCSB coaches. Proceeds from the event will benefit UCSB women’s basketball.

“A Legend and Links” will be held on Monday, October 8 at the Montecito Country Club.

An exclusive opportunity to hit the links with the UCSB coaching staff will precede a dinner and meet and greet with the 2012-13 women’s basketball team. At the dinner, Stringer will address the crowd.

Stringer, the head women’s basketball coach at Rutgers University and the mentor of current UCSB head coach Carlene Mitchell, will serve as the keynote speaker at the evening’s dinner. Stringer is a member of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, the Basketball Hall of Fame and is the third winningest coach in women’s basketball history.

Everyone in attendance will also receive a signed copy of Stringer’s bestselling book, “Standing Tall: A Memoir of Tragedy and Triumph.”

UCSB recently announced its 2012-13 schedule and it features nine teams that played in the postseason last year. Santa Barbara fans will be able to see some of the Gauchos’ toughest opponents inside the Thunderdome this season as USC (Nov. 27), Kentucky (Dec. 21) and Kansas State (Dec. 29) all will come to UCSB.
