Vertigan receives All-West regional honor

UC Santa Barbara center fielder Brett Vertigan has added another award to his mantle.

The 10th-round selection of the Oakland Athletics was named to the All West Region Second Team, one of just four Big West players selected to the two teams. The West Region is one of eight national regions and is split into 38 schools. Vertigan was one of just 33 players selected to the exclusive list.

Vertigan was an All-Big West First Team selection after leading the Big West in batting with a .381 mark and finishing in the top-10 in slugging percentage (second), on-base percentage (second), hits (first), runs (second), triples (first), stolen bases (first) and total bases (second).

Vertigan reached base in 55 of the Gauchos’ 56 games this season and opened the year with a 23-game hitting streak. The speedy leadoff batter had 27 multi-hit games and set a school record for triples in a season. Vertigan played an outstanding defensive center field and ranks in the UCSB top-10 with his 90 hits on the 2012 campaign.

The two-time Big West Player of the Week has begun his professional career with the Oakland organization and is currently playing for the Vermont Lake Monsters.
