The Santa Barbara Foresters shot down the L.A. Brewers’ 15-game win streak on Sunday, as Andrew Vasquez beat fellow UCSB teammate Jared Wilson 6-3 at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
The two college teammates were opposing starting pitchers for their respective summer-league teams. Vasquez allowed one earned run in three innings of work. Albert Minnis, one of five Forester pitchers, recorded the victory for pitching a scoreless sixth and seventh inning. Willie Kuhl relieved Minnis with one out in the eighth and Hunter Lemke finished in the ninth.
Wilson struck out seven in seven innings but gave up five runs on six hits.
Santa Barbara’s Austin Davidson hit his first home run in 59 at-bats this summer, a two-run shot to right field in the third inning.
The Foresters would score five of their six runs in that third inning, as Jacob Felts’ only hit of the game drove in another two runs. Kaeo Aliviado and Richard Sanguinetti both had multi-hit games for the Foresters.
For the Brewers, one of Morgan Micken’s two hits was a solo home run in the fifth inning that made the score 5-3.
Santa Barbara scored one last time in the bottom of the eighth to finish the scoring.
The Brewers won 2-of-3 in the weekend series to improve to 10-10 in California Collegiate League play. Santa Barbara is on top of the standings with a 14-7 record. Overall, the Foresters are 24-11 and the Brewers are 19-13.
Santa Barbara now heads out of town for a six-game road trip, starting with three games at second-place San Luis Obispo Blues. The Foresters will then see the Brewers for another three-game series over the weekend, this time in Orange County.
