Errors squeeze Foresters in CCL opener

Santa Barbara’s poor defense wasn’t a winning ingredient on Tuesday, as the Foresters committed eight errors in a 7-4 loss to MLB Academy.

It was the California Collegiate League opener for both teams.

Five of the Barons’ runs were unearned. They took a 7-2 lead in the sixth inning before the Foresters closed the gap with two runs in the eighth.

Chris Allen had a big day for the Barons. Allen reached base in all of his five plate appearances, recorded two hits including a home run, and stole a base.

Richard Sanguinetti was 4-for-5 for Santa Barbara. Nick Melino was 3-for-5 with a home run as Santa Barbara’s No. 3 and 4 hitters were a combined 7-for-10.

The Foresters actually outhit the Barons 13-10 but could not overcome the defensive blunders.

The two teams meet again on Wednesday in the second game of a three-game set.
