Westmont Men’s Tennis began competition in the 112th Ojai Valley Tournament on Friday in both singles and doubles competition.
Bryan Cox won his first two singles matches to advance to the quarterfinals tomorrow morning. In his first match, Cox, who is seeded at number four, cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jonathan Pollare of Whittier in the Round of 32. Cox then defeated David Hutton of CSU Sonoma 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 in the Round of 16.
Tomorrow, Cox will take on Nathan Martinet of Fresno Pacific at 8:00 a.m. for a chance to advance to the semifinals.
In other singles matches, Tim Goranson posted a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over David Moss of Biola in the Round of 32 to advance to face top-seeded Xavier Smith of Fresno Pacific in the Round of 16. Smith prevailed in the second match, defeating Goranson 6-3, 6-0.
John Bertram also had a first round win, defeating Chad Rubin of Point Loma Nazarene 6-2, 6-7, 7-5. Bertram faced second-seeded Cledson Carvalho in the Round of 16 and lost 6-2, 6-1.
Rodrigo Schaefer suffered an early exit from the tournament, falling to Rafael Coutinho of Concordia 6-2, 6-2 in the Round of 32.
In doubles action, Goranson and Bertram won two matches to advance to tomorrow’s semifinals. In the Round of 16, Goranson and Bertram defeated Thaigo Brito and John-Douglas Owens from Hope International 6-3, 6-1. The Westmont pair then took on top-seeded Carvalho and Martinet of Fresno Pacific in the quarterfinals and picked up a 6-2, 3-6 (10-7) victory.
Tomorrow afternoon, Goranson and Bertram will face Tyler Bowman and Greg de Andrade of Point Loma Nazarene.
Cox and Schaefer won their first round doubles match, defeating Rubin and Mickey Zablan of Point Loma Nazarene 6-2, 6-3. However, the duo lost in the quarterfinals to Fresno Pacific’s Lloyd Bruce-Burgess and Amart Sanchez 1-6, 7-5, (13-11).
