Santa Barbara swims past San Marcos

The Santa Barbara High swimming team defeated San Marcos 131-54 in the boys meet and 108-75 in the girls meet on Thursday.

Highlights for the Dons included Michael Van Wickle’s wins in the 200 yard IM (2:11.29) and the 500 yard freestyle (5:03.52). Also in the boys meet, Cuyler Gabriel won the 100 yard butterfly (1:00.43), Cristian Bridley won the 100 yard backstroke (1:01.50) and John Winsome made a splash by winning the 100 yard breast-stroke (1:11.14) in his varsity debut.

For the girls, Kelsey O’Brien took the 100 yard freestyle (54.33) and the 50 yard freestyle (24.52).  Sophie Trabucco won the 200 yard freestyle (1:57.57) while Hana Antrim won the 100 yard butterfly (1:04.70), Sierra McNeel took the 100 yard backstroke (1:05.50) and Madeline Trabucco finished first in the 100 yard breast-stroke (1:11.61).

The Royal received outstanding performances from Abhi Sarkar-Frandsen and Burke McComb. Sarkar-Frandsen set personal records to win both the 100 yard freestyle (51.04) and the 50 yard freestyle (22.86), while McComb took the one-meter diving event.

In the girls meet, Dasha Depew struggled in the 200 yard freestyle but persevered and pulled out a win in the 500 yard freestyle (5:16.44).

Megan Riley set a personal record to place second in the 100 yard breast-stroke (1:16.20) and Riley Heiduk shave 10 seconds off of her best time to finish third in the 500 yard freestyle (5:34.62).

The Royals also swept the girls diving competition with Emilee Mahoney (191.40), Cessia Azevedo (159.20) and Cassie Colegrove (154.90) finishing first, second and third, respectively.
