Off-day sinks Vaqueros in WSC standings

David Aarons shot 77 and Forrest Iverson carded a 78 on Monday but SBCC recorded one of its highest scores of the season to place fifth in WSC No. 5 at Saticoy CC in Somis.

Canyons won the seven-team men’s golf tourney at 379, edging Glendale by three shots. Ventura was third (391), followed by Citrus and SBCC at 398. The Vaqueros lost a tiebreaker and finished fifth.

Nick Cox added an 81 for Santa Barbara, which fell into a tie for third in the WSC standings. Canyons leads at 28-2, followed by Glendale (19-11), SBCC (18-12) and Ventura (18-12).

“The course took a good bite out of us and so did our opponents,” said coach Chuck Melendez. “This course reminds me of La Purisima because it can jump up and bite you sometimes.”

The Vaqueros will play in the Ventura Invitational on Friday at Marshallia Ranch on Vandenberg Air Force Base.
