Guerra leads Dons into winning battle

Tanner Guerra foiled Verdugo Hills for seven innings on Saturday in a 5-0 complete-game shutout for the junior right-hander and Santa Barbara High.

Guerra mixed his off-speed pitches with well-located fastballs to limit Verdugo Hills to five hits. Guerra recorded five strikeouts and was 3-for-3 at the plate.

Connor McManigal and Guerra combined for six of the Dons’ 10 hits. McManigal was 3-for-5 with three RBI. His two-out RBI single in the second inning gave the DOns their first lead. A two-run double in a three-run sixth inning gave Guerra some cushion.

Kenny Crawford followed McManigal’s double with a RBI single. Michael Bay scored the Dons’ final run in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch.

The game was part of the Chatsworth Tournament, at which the Dons are 2-1.

Santa Barbara now heads into a week with three Channel League games starting with Buena on Monday. That contest is a rain make-up scheduled for 3:15 at Eddie Mathews Field.
