Gauchos ‘Messmorized’ by Cal State Bakersfield

The CSU Bakersfield baseball team dinked and dunked UCSB and Spenser Messmore took care of the rest.

Bakersfield scored their first five runs courtesy of four UCSB walks, three hit batters, three infield hits and an error, while Messmore surgically worked through the Gaucho offense as the Roadrunners won the non-conference game at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium, 8-2.

Until the Gauchos broke through for two seventh inning runs, Messmore had allowed just one runner past second base.

Meanwhile, the Roadrunners (12-15 overall) chased UCSB starter Matthew Vedo after just six outs. Vedo accounted for four of the first five outs via strikeout, but he lost control in the second when he walked the No. 8 batter, hit a batter, then walked two more to force in a run. Oscar Sanay then had a check swing infield single to bring in another run and CSUB led 3-0.

The ‘Runners added to their 5-0 advantage with Cael Brockmeyer’s two-run home run in the seventh inning and capped the scoring on Frank Martinez’s solo homer in the ninth.

UCSB scored its two runs in the seventh when Marc Venning’s double to center field scored Joey Wallace and Venning later scored on Steven Fisher’s sacrifice fly.

The Gauchos host Cal State Northridge in a Big West Conference series from Thursday through Saturday with the first two games starting at 3 p.m.
