STOCKTON – No. 15 UCSB (19-13, 3-2) defeated Pacific (10-16, 2-3) earlier this morning, 8-7. The Gauchos opened up the game with two back-to-back goals. Pacific scored only one in the first quarter, and the Gauchos took an early lead, 2-1.
The Gauchos scored the first goal of the second quarter, and the Tigers responded a minute after with a goal. UCSB scored two more goals before the end of the half, and the Gauchos gained a three-goal lead, 5-2.
The Tigers scored three goals in the beginning of the second half. It was not enough to overcome UCSB, who scored two more goals, and they remained in the lead, 7-5.
Pacific scored one minute into the fourth quarter to cut UCSB’s lead to one, 7-6. The two teams played even for the next two minutes before the Gauchos scored with four minutes left, going up by two. UCSB clinched the lead, 8-7, with a notable 11 saves by junior Ruth Milne, and a hat-trick by junior Bryce Winton.
The Gauchos claimed the third seed in the Big West Conference. They will play next weekend in the Big West Tournament, April 27-29, 2012.
