Canyons locks up WSC title at Marshallia Ranch

SBCC had an off-day in the WSC Finals on Monday and took sixth in the 36-hole tourney at Marshallia Ranch on Vandenberg AFB.

Trevor Gorski led the Vaqueros, shooting 79 and 75 for a 10-over-par 154. Gorski and David Aarons (80-79–159) qualified for the Southern Cal Regional as individuals. Kyle Rieb (80-79) also finished at 159.

Aaron West of Canyons was the medalist, shooting 7-under 65 in the first round and 75 in the second for a 140 total.

Canyons recorded identical rounds of 366 to win the last two WSC meets (No. 9 and 10). The Cougars (732) finished 29 shots ahead of Ventura. Glendale was third at 765.

Canyons, Glendale and Ventura all qualified for the Regional, another 36-hole event on Monday, May 7 at Glendora CC.

Santa Barbara opened with a 401, trailing Ventura (382) by 19 shots in the battle for the third and final Regional berth.

“We didn’t have a great start and we couldn’t overcome a 19-shot deficit,“ said coach Chuck Melendez.

Canyons dominated the WSC season race with a 56-4 record. Glendale was 12 back at 44-16. SBCC placed fifth in the seven-team field with a 26-34 mark.
