Williams leads Cardinals’ sweep

The Bishop Diego baseball team swept its doubleheader against Santa Maria on Saturday, as Aidan Williams excelled both on the mound and at the plate. The Cardinals won the first game 19-2 and the second 10-2.

In the opener, Williams was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a home run, which earned him four RBIs.

John Salda also caused problems for the Santa Maria pitchers, going 3-4 and scoring four runs. Reese Moutlon also helped the Cardinals light up the scoreboard, going 3-4 with a triple.

J.D. Yonke pitched for Bishop Diego and had four strikeouts.

By the start of the second game, the bats had cooled off for the Cardinals.

The team was held scoreless for the first three innings, and Santa Maria took a 2-0 lead.

But the Cardinals eventually were able to get runners on base, and the coaching staff gave their players the green light to run. The team finished with six stolen based.

“Our team speed kind of got to them,” assistant coach Kai Solin said.

Williams pitched six inning of the game, and Jack Gregson came in to close the game.

Williams continued his tear at the plate, going 2-2 with a double and a home run.

Reese Moulton also completed an excellent day and went 2-4.

The Cardinals (2-1) will play next on Wednesday at home against Orcutt Academy.
