Unbeaten Ventura women defeat SBCC, 7-2

Ventura swept the singles 6-0 on Tuesday and went on to defeat SBCC 7-2 in a WSC women’s tennis match at Ventura.

The first-place Pirates (12-0, 5-0) are the only team to defeat the Vaqueros (10-2, 4-2) this year. Santa Barbara lost three-set matches at Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles.

SBCC’s Lindsay Penner suffered her first defeat in 12 singles matches, losing to Grace Hanamoto 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Megan Thomas dropped a close 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 decision to Layne Gallimore at No. 4.

“We did our best but Ventura is a darn good team,” said coach Debbie Ekola. “They out-rallied us at 4, 5 and 6 singles. There were 20-, 30- and 40-stroke rallies.”

SBCC will host Santa Monica on Friday at 2 p.m.
