Tooley’s two-run single stands up for Cardinals, Williams

Aidan Williams didn’t allow an earned run in seven innings on Friday, leading Bishop Diego’s baseball team to a 2-1 victory over Santa Clara in the Cardinals’ Frontier League opener.

Williams, a sophomore, struck out four batters to improve his season record to 2-0. The Cardinals are 5-2 overall.

“Both teams were able to make good pitches and play pretty good defense,” said Cardinals assistant coach Kai Solin.

Bishop got its two runs in the first inning on a two-run single from Nolan Tooley. Scott Mandrell and Jack Gregson drew walks to reach base and scored on Tooley’s hit. Of the Cardinals’ four hits on the day, Williams recorded two of them.

Santa Clara cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the fourth inning. The Saints threatened again in the sixth inning but a double play by the Cardinals defense kept Santa Clara from adding to the scoreboard.
