Royals score in 9th, beat Ventura; Berlo fans 16

Freshman Veronica Villarreal singled home Jocelyn Flattery for the winning run in the ninth inning, and pitcher Kristen Berlo struck out 16 Ventura Cougars as San Marcos won 3-2 in a Channel League softball game on Tuesday.

Berlo struck out two in the ninth inning to close out the second win of the season for the Royals (2-6, 1-1). The junior was huge with the bat, too, going 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

Sandra Lopez singled home Berlo in the fourth inning to tie the score at 1-1. Berlo singled and reached second on a wild pitch.

The game went into extra innings tied at 1.

The Royals took a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth. Berlo doubled and scored on a RBI single by Vicki Villegas.

But Ventura knotted the score in the bottom of the eighth on a solo homer by Kristen Lopez.
 
In the ninth, Flattery was hit by pitch and came all the way around to score on a long single by Villarreal.
