Eighteen hits translates to 14 runs for Warriors

Warrior bats came alive in a 14-9 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over the Sea Lions of Point Loma Nazarene (11-12, 4-6 GSAC) on Friday afternoon at Russ Carr Field. Westmont tallied 18 hits and scored in six different innings to improve their overall record to 9-12-1 and their GSAC record to 4-6.

Reliever Devin Matson (1-0) picked up the win after pitching two innings and allowing one run on one hit. Chad Etchinson (0-1) was assigned the loss for the Point Loma. Etchinson pitched two innings, giving up three runs on three hits, while walking two and striking out two.

Back-to-back-to-back doubles in the first inning from Tim Leary, Coby Cress and David Gabel helped the Warriors take a four to three lead. However, the Sea Lions scored two in the top of the second to go ahead 5-4. Point Loma remained in the lead until the bottom of the fourth when Tim Leary tied the game at nine-all with a two-run home run to right field.

After Matson retired the side in order for the Warriors in the top of the fifth, Westmont added three more runs in the bottom half of the inning. An RBI single by J.J. Turbin drove in Brent Fukushima before Coby Cress doubled with the bases load to drive in Turbin and Ryan Beveridge. That put the Warriors up 12-9.

Westmont added another run in the bottom of the six and the bottom of the seventh.

Cress and Turbin were each four for five at the plate with Turbin scoring three times and adding an RBI while Cress scored twice and knocked in three RBIs. Leary was two for five with two runs scored and five RBI.

Just over an hour after the end of the game, the team loaded a bus to head for San Diego where they will take on the same Sea Lions in a doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
