Dons start Anaheim tourney with pair of wins

The Santa Barbara High baseball team started play in the Anaheim Tournament with a 15-2 win over Canyon and a 5-3 victory against Saugus.

The opening game was closer than the score suggests as the Dons scored 12 of their 15 runs in the final three innings.

Kees t’Sas had an excellent day on the mound with seven strikeouts and just one walk. He helped his own cause by hitting a double and a triple to earn three RBIs.

“It was his best performance since the first game of the season,” assistnat coach Mike Cooney said.

The next game against Saugus was more competitive, and Kenny Crawford had to work out of a few jams to earn a 5-3 victory.

“It was really a gutty performance by [him],” Cooney said about the starting pitcher. “He had a lot of baserunners, but got the big out when it counted.”

Crawford went the distance and threw 117 pitches to get the complete game win.

Max St. John and Toby Minehan each had RBI-singles in the sixth inning to give Santa Barbara the two runs it needed to stay undefeated in the tournament.

The Dons (8-6) will head to Anaheim on Monday to continue its run against San Clemente.
