Dons falter in clash with Ventura

Santa Barbara High’s baseball team was upended by Ventura and Reed Nothwang on Friday afternoon, as the Cougars picked up their first Channel League win of the season in a 3-0 decision over the Dons.

Nothwang pitched the complete game shutout for Ventura, which won its first league game and stands at 1-2.

Nothwang’s counterpart, Kenny Crawford, also threw a complete game and actually allowed fewer hits than Nothwang. But the Dons hurt themselves with a season-high five errors. None of the three runs were earned.

The result drops the Dons to 1-3 in league play.

“This puts us behind the 8-ball in the Channel League,” said Dons assistant coach Mike Cooney.

Offensively, Connor McManigal reached base four times and recorded two hits. The Dons couldn’t provide the big hit, however, and ended up leaving eight runners stranded.

Santa Barbara (6-4) returns to action on Saturday against Chatsworth as part of the Chatsworth Tournament.
