Defensive Cougars track down Royals

Ventura came from behind to defeat San Marcos on Tuesday, as the Cougars claimed the Channel League matchup by virtue of a 21-25, 25-20, 25-23, 26-24 result.

“We didn’t play very well tonight and Ventura played inspired defense,” explained San Marcos head coach Roger Kuntz.

After winning the first set, the Royals held 22-19 leads in both the third and fourth games only to let it slip away.

The Royals are now 0-2 in league play with a matchup against Santa Barbara looming on Thursday.

“We have to get better real quick here,” Kuntz said. “Our setting is very inconsistent and we’re not playing very good defense.”

BJ Elpon had a good night for San Marcos, recording five kills on 10 attempts. Kuntz thought junior Chris Newton contributed well.

“He’s a very positive guy for us, he plays with a tremendous amount of heart,” Kuntz said of Newton.
