Chargers-Royals dual meet features diving record, CIF consideration times

Dos Pueblos’ Lester Wright broke the school record in diving on Friday, starting the Chargers on their way to a double-victory over San Marcos in a Channel League dual meet. The Charger boys won 136-47 and the girls score was 123-62.

Wright, a junior transfer from Rio Mesa High School, posted a new record of 321.15.

Besides Wright, the Chargers had several impressive showings, including Nic Lum, Blake Parrish and Alex Valente. Parrish won the 100 breaststroke in CIF consideration time as did Valente in his 100 butterfly. Lum won both the 100 and 200 free. Grant Schroeder edged teammate Vincent Dodero for the win in the 50 free.

Freshman Walker Bell won the 500 free just off consideration time.

Royals head coach Brian Roth noted several highlights for San Marcos in the girls competition.

“We swam very well for our first meet of the year,” Roth said. “This is our best starting point we have ever had.”

Dasha Depew won the 500 and 200 free while freshman Anika Avelar also won a race for the Royals in the 100 backstroke. Sophomore Emilee Mahoney captured the diving title with a score of 214.40.

For Dos Pueblos, Jamie Neushul and Maelyn Adornetto each won an individual race while contributing to two different victories in the 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay. Hailey Goodner won the 50-free sprint and also took a spot on two different winning relay teams.

All four of Dos Pueblos’ girls relay teams recorded CIF consideration times.

“There were many girls who improved from their times last year already,” said Dos Pueblos girls coach Kevin Kuga. “I know it is only the beginning of the season so I am really looking forward to my girls improvement.”
