Berlo has monster day in 5-2 win over Bishop Diego

Kristen Berlo put her stamp on San Marcos’ 5-2 non-league softball win over Bishop Diego on Friday.

As a pitcher, Berlo struck out a season-best 17. At the plate, she went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs.

Stephanie Swann tripled and scored on a Berlo single to get the Royals off to a 1-0 start in the first inning.

Bishop did its scoring in the third. Taryn Zaragosa reached first base on an error, Ali Everson singled to put runners on the corners and Madison Ballard brought them in with a double for a 2-1 lead.

San Marcos responded with three runs in the bottom of the third. Veronica Villarreal led off with a double,  Swann singled and stole second and Berlo followed with a 2-run single.  Angel Mermis doubled two batters later to score Berlo and give the Royals a 4-2 advantage.

Mermis went 2-for-3 and Swann was 2-for-4.

Berlo singled home Jocelyn Flattery for the Royals’ fifth run in the sixth inning.
