Carpinteria pulled out a nail-biter over Cate, 6-4, in a Tri-Valley League girls water polo match on Wednesday at the Rams’ pool.
The Warriors were down 4-1 with two minutes left in the third period.
“We called and a time out, got it together and scored two quick goals before the end of the period,” Carpinteria coach Bryan Swarm said.
Tatiana Verdugo scored both goals to fire up the Warriors for the final period.
In that period, Maddie Brooks scored two goals and Hope Grant got the other, and the Carpinteria defense held Cate scoreless. Goalie Vanessa Villa made four saves in the last seven minutes.
“They gave me a few more gray hairs today,” said Swarm.
“It was an enormous letdown for a Cate team that truly dominated the entire game and led for the entire match until the final three minutes,” said Cate coach Nathan Aldridge.
Carpinteria improves to 16-9 and 7-1 in the TVL.
