UCSB’s Wisdom hurls first collegiate shutout

Sophomore Kathryn Pilpil hit her first home run of the season with two outs at the bottom of the second inning to help lead UCSB to a 1-0 victory over UNLV early Saturday morning at Campus Diamond.

Freshman Shelby Wisdom (3-4), meanwhile, tossed her first collegiate shutout. She pitched a complete game and allowed just four hits – all singles – and one walk while striking out eight.

UNLV (6-6) left six base runners stranded during the loss while the Gauchos (5-10) left three on.

Rebel pitcher Amanda Oliveto (4-4) pitched a complete game allowing just four hits while fanning three.

Jessica Soria, Lauren Boser and Brooke Putich each tallied a base hit in the game. Soria has extended her hitting streak to five games while Pilpil has had at least one hit in all four games at the Gaucho Classic I.

The win marks the Gauchos’ fourth straight. They are now 4-0 within the friendly confines of Campus Diamond this season.

The shutout is the Gauchos’ first since its 2011 season-ending 2-0 win at UC Davis (May 14). The last time UCSB won a game by way of a 1-0 score was on Feb. 12, 2011 against Western Kentucky.

UCSB will conclude action at the Gaucho Classic I with two games on Sunday against Nevada at 9:30 am and San Diego at 2:30 pm.
