Schaeffer wins State Scholar award

Erika Schaeffer, a standout runner on the SBCC cross country and track teams, has been named to the 2011 California Scholar Athlete Honor Roll. Schaeffer had a 3.96 GPA and was one of 11 women to receive the highest student-athlete honor from the California Community College Athletic Association.
She finished 13th in the 2010 State Cross Country Championships and was the Southern Cal steeplechase champion in the 2011 track and field season. She took second in the State steeplechase at Sacramento with an 11:15.53 clocking, the 2nd-fastest in school history.

Schaeffer is attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and majoring in Veterinary Sciences. She redshirted in cross country last fall and is currently competing on Mustangs’ track team.

“Erika is very disciplined and committed to excellence,” said SBCC cross country and track coach Scott Fickerson. “She works equally hard in the classroom and in training. She is very positive and upbeat. Her great attitude is contagious.”

The State Scholar Athletes will be honored at the Celebration of Scholar Athletes Luncheon during the 15th annual CCCAA Convention on April 4 at the San Mateo Marriott Hotel.
