Saturday’s Westmont games are free to public

The Warriors will be opening the doors on Saturday night and offering free admission to the men’s and women’s basketball games. The sixth-ranked Westmont Women’s Basketball team will host the Eagles of Concordia at 5:30 p.m. The men’s game, which is set to begin at 7:30 p.m., will feature a showdown between eighth-ranked Westmont and eleventh-ranked Concordia.

Westmont Athletics plans to honor Rath Shelton prior to the men’s basketball on Saturday. Shelton, a 1950 graduate of Westmont, worked at the college for 30 years, serving first as a baseball coach, then in the admissions office and as sports information coordinator.

Shelton eventually became Westmont’s director of public relations and director of the Alumni Association, which he founded. Shelton passed away on February 1 of complications of pneumonia, he was 88 years old.

Shelton is well known in the community. A founding member of the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table, Shelton was inducted into the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Hall of Fame for his support of local athletics. Shelton also taught at Santa Barbara City College and worked with the Santa Barbara Ad Council.

Additionally, the Warriors will participate in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Play 4Kay initiative on Saturday night. The program seeks to raise awareness of the fight against breast cancer and honors legendary North Carolina State coach Kay Yow who died of the disease in January of 2009.

In addition to the basketball games, Westmont will be hosting several other events on campus on Saturday. Westmont Baseball will host Oregon Tech in a doubleheader that serves as the team’s home opener. First pitch is at 10:00 a.m.

Westmont Track and Field will host UC Santa Barbara and Pepperdine at the Westmont Track with field events beginning at 10:45 a.m. and the first race scheduled for noon.

Westmont Men’s and Women’s Tennis will also be in action at the Abbott Tennis Courts. The sixth-ranked men will host Claremont-Mudd Scripps at eleven o’clock while the women will take on The Master’s at two.
