Playing at the Irvine Southern California Championships on Thursday, the San Marcos girls water polo team could not withstand a fourth-quarter surge from Carlsbad and lost 9-6.
Hannah Koper led the Royals with four goals, and Haley Johnson netted two more.
The match was a stalemate through the first three quarters with the score tied at 5-5 heading into the fourth.
“We had a very good defensive game, but had two bad defensive reads that really cost us,” head coach Chuckie Roth said.
Jenna Phreaner had 10 saves in the goal, but could not prevent four fourth-quarter scores from Carlsbad.
San Marcos will continue play in the Irvine Tournament tomorrow against Coronado.
