Off-day sinks SBCC to sixth

Forrest Iverson recorded a 75 and Reese Hutchins shot 77 on Monday but SBCC had an off day and finished sixth at WSC No. 3 on a cold day in Bakersfield.

Mathias Dahl of Glendale was the medalist in the men’s golf tourney, firing a 2-under 70 at Rio Bravo CC.

Canyons shot 379 to win the seven-school event. Ventura was 12 shots back at 391, followed by Hancock and Glendale, both at 396. Hancock won a scorecard playoff for the third spot.

The Vaqueros, 19-7 on the season, totaled 402. They remained in second place in the WSC, tied with Ventura at 12-6. Canyons leads the pack with a 17-1 record.

“This wasn’t our best day and the conditions were real tough with temperatures in the mid-40s,“ said coach Chuck Melendez. “I was proud of the way Forrest and Reese played today.”

The Vaqueros will host the Pt. Conception Open, a 36-hole tourney on Sunday and Monday. The first round will be played Sunday at Marshallia Ranch on Vandenberg AFB, starting at 10 a.m., with the final round on Monday at La Purisima in Lompoc.
