THE NEXT LEVEL

Santa Barbara athletes are all over the place. So many that it’s hard to keep up with. This is a place to keep tabs on our local athletes that have gone on to play at a higher level outside of the community.

Each week PresidioSports.com publishes running updates, news, and notes following our locally connected athletes making waves elsewhere.

Check back here routinely to find out who’s doing what. If you have a news tip, feel free to email us at [email protected].

Former Dos Pueblos teammates Tiera Schroeder, left, and Kiley Neushul could face each other this weekend.

Neushul, Schroeder now college rivals

Longtime friends and teammates in club and high school water polo, Kiley Neushul and Tiera Schroeder could be at opposite ends of the pool this weekend at the Stanford Invitational.

Neushul plays for the top-ranked Cardinal while Schroeder plays at cross-Bay rival and No. 2-rankd Cal.

Neushul and Schroeder led Dos Pueblos to four consecutive CIF Championships and a record 67 straight wins — the most ever by team in high school water polo’s top division. The two started playing club soccer and water polo together and, in 2005, they led Santa Barbara Aquatics Club to the 12U girls National Championship, the first of many national titles.

Both players have made an immediate impact with their teams.

Two weeks ago, Schroeder scored three goals during the 4-0 Cal weekend at the Spartan Invitational, including her first collegiate goal in the 13-5 win over No. 16 UC Davis. She also scored one goal each in the Bears’ wins over Pacific (9-4) and No. 17 UCSB (11-7). Schroeder’s uncle is four-time Olympian and current USA National Team men’s water polo coach Terry Schroeder, a San Marcos alumni.

Neushul scored Stanford’s first goal of the 2012 season, posting a pair of hat tricks with three goals in each of Stanford’s victories at the California Speedo Invitational Saturday. She was named MPSF Newcomer of the Week, helping he Cardinal open defense of its 2011 national title with wins of 17-2 and 19-7 over No. 11 Loyola Marymount and No. 15 UC Davis, respectively.

Neushul’s mother, Cathy, is the women’s water polo coach at UCSB and Director of Santa Barbara Aquatics Club.

Kiley was recently interviewed by the Stanford Daily and talks about her new life on The Farm, the transition from high school to college water polo, her dislike for golf and her goal of playing in the Olympics. Click here for story.

Stone scores his first points as a pro

Former Dos Pueblos High basketball star Julyan Stone scored his first NBA points for the Denver Nuggets last week.

Stone, a 6-7 point guard, scored six points in a 122-93 rout of the Sacramento Kings last Wedneday. He also had five rebounds, two assists, a blocked shot, two steals and four turnovers in 20 minutes of action.

He played 12 minutes in Sunday’s 109-105 loss to the Clippers and scored six points, making one 3-pointer.

SBCC scoring sensation headed to ASU

Jessica Domenichelli, the greatest goal scorer in SBCC women’s soccer history, will take her talents to Arizona State University.

Domenichelli scored 52 in her two seasons playing for the Vaqueros. Her 25 goals as a freshman in 2010 was a school record that she bettered this past fall with 27 goals. Her 122 career points (52 goals and 18 assists) is also a school record.

Domenichelli, whose older sister, Danielle, ran track and cross country at UCSB, told the El Dorado Hills Telegraph, her hometown newspaper, that Arizona State had everything she wanted from a four-year school.

“I like how big on sports they are at ASU, but also academic-wise, they make sure their athletes stay on track. Being part of the Pac-12 is also exciting.”
