Deering is new president of Semana Nautica Association

Gene Deering, a member of the first UCSB men’s soccer team to play in the NCAA Tournament and a prominent endurance athlete in the community, is the new president of the Semana Nautica Association.

Deering has served on the board of directors of the Santa Barbara summer sports festival for the last five years.

Former UCSB soccer player Gene Deering has been voted president of the Semana Nautica Association.

Semana Nautica will be celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.

The festival includes such activities as ocean swimming, age group and masters swimming, beach volleyball, beach biathlon, 15-k road race, cycling, sailing, tennis, semipro baseball, the Krazy Kardboard Kayak Race and more.

Deering played forward for the Gauchos from 2000-2003. He was on the team that received its first NCAA Tournament bid in 2002 and won its debut game, a 2-0 victory over the University of San Diego. In his senior year, the Gauchos got to the third round of the tournament.

Deering turned to running and triathlons after college. He competes in most of the local races and is usually a top-20 finisher. He is a member of the Santa Barbara Athletic Association.

He also serves on the board of the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table.

Deering is employed at Radius Commercial Real Estate & Investments, where he specializes in leasing and sales of all types of commercial property.
