Warriors fall short after huge 2nd-half comeback

Westmont made up an 18-point second half deficit, tying The Master’s 60-60 late in the second half of their GSAC men’s basketball game Tuesday night at Murchison Gym.

But the Mustangs made four free throws in their final two possessions, and Westmont’s Preston Branson had a driving layup roll off the rim with 10 seconds left, leaving the Warriors on the short end of  a 64-60 decision.

“(The Master’s) is a very good team and played like a good team,” said Westmont head coach John Moore. “With all that, we had a chance to win the game. I like the energy that I saw, but I would like to see that energy for 40 minutes. There were moments that showed the kind of team that we’ve been, but unfortunately it was not quite enough.”

The result leaves Westmont in a four-way tie for first place in the conference with Master’s, Concordia and Point Loma at 5-2.

C.J. Miller scored 20 points and Branson had 12 for Westmont (13-3), which trailed 49-31 with 11:11 to play in the second half.

Anthony Cammon led Master’s with 17 points.
